My understanding (and I would like to be corrected if wrong) is that kernel messages (that's what you're wanting, right?) go to the VC which is active. Mount a disk and you get told about it, and whether to fsck it etc. If you're not seeing that, klogd -c <n> will change the priority level that gets through (man klogd). Certain errors seem to (or have in the past) affect the level. In X, those messages come out on VC7, but you can't see them until X quits because they're "underneath" the graphical display.
