There was a discussion on this about a month ago, check the list archives
for details. The subject was "How to save real audio files?". To
summarize: there's a kernel module or two to do this with the kernel
drivers, and the ALSA drivers include support by default.

i couldn't manage to get recording to mp3 to work well, i always ended up
with massive skipping after the first few seconds. Maybe it would work if
you use a machine and encoder fast enough to work in realtime, or use some
sort of buffering system between the input stream and the encoder.
