well, I found the problem... of course, 'twas my own stupidity that caused it :-) The hosts.allow file needs to have a newline after the last entry in order to work. If I wasn't half asleep, I would've thought to look in /var/log/daemon.log before I posted :-) Sorry, about the wasted bandwidth folks.
