I had problems with make menuconfig when I had slink, and your report somehow remind me something. Anyway, I am running unstable now and never solved those problems. But you might want to try the less visual make config. It certainly will not help you to get the lfxdialog.o file but you will probably be able to make a configuration file for a new kernel. BTW: Something I heard of only recently is that when using make config you can answer by ? in order to get help for each item.
