you have to set gpm and x to use imps/2 protocol, and install imwheel (I know it's in potato, dunno about slink). imwheel needs to be started before x, I put it in my .xsession file just before the exec (windowmanager) line. if it's a USB mouse, you'll probably have to move to a 2.3.x kernel, I had to, imps/2 wouldn't work for me with 2.2.x USB.
