On laptops with PCMCIA modems I would still recommend to use the symlink /dev/modem created by the script /etc/pcmcia/serial upon the insertion of the PCMCIA modem, since it is NOT garanted, that the modem will allwas be connected to the same serial port (I have had on my laptop this problem once or twice). A program relying on the information modem is always on /dev/ttyS0 (or what ever) will be realy confused, when it is sodenly not there, and to track down this bug can mean some work.
