It's actually very simple. I had the same problem. The broblem is that you probably have both gdm and xdm running at the same time (at least that's what I had). I've stoped xdm and that solved the problem. You also should do: update-rc.d -f xdm remove to avoid this in the future. Hope that would help. Regards.
