Thanks to all. My problem was that pump was not installed and I didn't know I needed it. I had installed Woody from a CD set some months ago.
Once I knew I needed it, I was able to install pump from the CD set and then route set the gateway. Bingo, I was online! Apt-get dist-upgrade ran in 15 minutes!
