I have the same problem. After editing /var/state/apt/lists/www.uk.debian.org_debian_dists_potato_main_binary-i386_Packages ( two occurrences of optionnal changed to optional) and rerunning apt-get update, the file is downloaded again and I am where I started. Johan.
