No, the slink version should work fine on a slink system. Mario, can you give me some more details on your system? Assuming you are running standard slink tetex and slink jadetex, all should be well (I use it a lot still). The only reason I can think of for your problems would be if you were using a potato tetex and a slink jadetex, since in potato, tetex moved stuff from /usr/lib/texmf to /usr/share/texmf.
