This is a real flame-bait topic - everyone has their own opinions and preferences. At home, I'm very happy with enlightenment and GNOME, but I also have KDE installed. At work, I have a much less powerful machine, which only does 256 colours, so GNOME/E would be a nightmare. One that machine, I use FXCE, which looks a lot like CDE, but uses GTK. I don't believe it is packaged for Debian (at least, not for slink), but it's relatively painless to build and install from source (./configure ; make ; make install). It's available from www.xfce.org, I believe, if you are interested.
