I'm not sure what kind of stuff that gets put in your files, but a little research turned up the tr command. To rid my file of ^Gs I did the following: tr -d '\007' < output.out > output.new and my ^Gs were gone! I need to try it with a few others. Pretty cool and I did have to write anything.
