No one answered him.  Today I encountered the same problem, and wrote
the author of efax, Ed Casas.  He explained that this problem is
caused by a bug in version 0.8 of efax, which only strikes when run on
a libc6 system.  Upgrading to efax 0.9 from potato (which luckily
doesn't depend on the newer libraries) fixed the problem instantly.

I hope Johann is still reading and finds this helpful.
