For PNP cards you also need to set up an /etc/isapnp.conf file. man isapnp and man pnpdump. You'll need to edit the /etc/isapnp.conf file you get for your card's settings (io, irq, and dma). If you don't know them, and you have windows installed, you can get them from My Computer > Device Manager (or some such way). I don't have sound on this computer (too lazy :) ), but there's a lot of info in the archives and people more knowledgable than I.
