Thanks to all how have sent replies. I have set the mtu and mru values to 552 and that has raised the upload speed test of the above example to 2.2 kB/s. I also tried testing a 2.0.37 kernel and that did not produce any different results. With ppp debug turned on I notice that at the start of a pause the ppp.log shows a reset signal. For the above file the with mtu of 552 there were a total of 25 resets like the following. Aug 23 10:47:12 brian pppd[1484]: rcvd [CCP ResetReq id=0x25] Aug 23 10:47:12 brian pppd[1484]: sent [CCP ResetAck id=0x25] The modem is an internal ISA USR Sporster, so it is not the greatest modem. I have no idea what type of modem is on the other end of the connection and I don't have access to other modems. So it looks like I will have to live with 2.2 kB/s uploads.
