dpkg --get-selections > /usr/local/dpkg_packages will save the list of packages you have selected to a file named /usr/local/dpkg_packages and then
dpkg --set-selections < /usr/local/dpkg_packages will select packages based on that file. I would expect that any filename could be used. The example command lines are from a recent message on this mailing list "Re: Disk drive: going, going, ..." so this is really someone else's knowledge just being passed along.
