A better way to do it is to add "exec enlightenment" to your ~/.xsession. Enlightenment has done strange things to people's systems: it generated a 700+ MB core dump that filled up a friend's hard drive. If you use the .xsession method to start enlightenment, .xsession-errors contains any error messages it encountered while trying to start it.
