Add the following to /etc/apt/apt.conf Apt::Cache-Limit 12582912; (Don't ask me why it works, but it worked for me.) What is intersting is that it dies at different places in the package list each time. I should tell you that the system had been installed on an athlon 650 MHz box and I simply moved the disks and other peripherals onto a Duron box. I'm hoping this is not a problem.
