Are you using the distributed kernel or one you compiled?  If the latter,
you probably failed to select ppp.  If the former, you have probably hosed
up your modules stuff somehow.

You didn't mention that before.  What do you mean by "won't enable the
modem"?  Please tell us exactly what commands you are giving and the exact
and complete reponses.  Post the output of 'setserial -a /dev/ttyS2' both
before and after you change the base address.

What do you mean by that?  isapnp should run, complete its task, and exit.
Also, I think that you probably don't want to change the base address and
also use isapnp.
