Actually, in the latest version of apt they made this much easier! You can now use a deb-src line in your sources.list, and then use "apt-get --compile source packagename" then apt should download the sources and try to compile them for you (you'll still need the proper -dev packages, remember) i can't give you more pointers than that though, as i haven't yet tried this feature...
