Add the following line to your X resources file:
Netscape*encodingFilters:
I got this from http://help.netscape.com/kb/client/index.html. Search
for "How do I prevent Netscape from automatically unzipping .gz files?".
I don't know if setting this resource really disables decompression
but, at least, it seems to make sure that the extension is kept.
