PPP over Ethernet is a truly stupid idea whose purpose is to allow DSLAM manufacturers to sell equipment to both the telephone companies and ISPs. (Why would you want to provide access to a packet-switched network over a circuit-switched network simulated on a packet-switched network? Ick!) If there are any alternatives, I'd suggest switching. I was unable to find any information at DejaNews or AltaVista about support it, though.
