Followup: Nothing I tried, and as the archive of the debian-sparc
mailing list shows nothing that several other people have tried, worked.

I ended up making the rescue.bin and root.bin floppies, and "
boot floppy" worked.

Many thanks to the Debian Sparc development team for making a system
that, even from floppies, is installable while stuck on a serial
console. And thanks also to Mark Zimmerman for how to send an "L1-A"
(better known as "break" to the previously initiated).
