I use a2ps 'with' magicfilter but not 'in'  it.  I'm not
sure of what you mean here.  I have no reference to a2ps in my
/etc/printcap file.

I have setup the /etc/a2ps.cfg to always print at 2 pages side by side per
sheet.  The filename, date/time and user are printed on each page.
Setting up the cfg file lets me do just a2p2 filename, to acomplish
the above results.  Also a2ps -4 filename will print 4 pages per sheet
with the info you desire.

I don't get any blank pages between jobs so it must be something in
the a2ps.cfg.  Or if you get blanks between pages printed usimg 
lpr filename, I would think a problem in your /etc/printcap.
