and thanks a lot again - now I got it. Indeed, changing this made it
work without problems.

Seems like that. Jaroslav Fojtik, the current author and maintainer of
wp2latex, whom I also had contacted, said that he had installed it
successfully and without problems under Red Hat Linux (but did not try
Debian). I will send him a mail with the Debian-specific modifications
of the makefile, hoping that he includes them.
