the a7n266-vm works fine .. with tehir drivers..
i think you're running into the gcc-2.9x.y version vs gcc-3.x problem ??
( just a wild guess )
and otherwise.. i dont recall needing/using the "-C" option in make
( its been a while ... and also try a "make clean" too )
