Hi all, Yesterday I rebuild my kernel for the first time in my life. Compiling the kernel went very smooth when I rebooted my system it ran perfectly. I was very happy.However, today I booted my system and trouble started.
The system gave a message that the filesystem had not been unmounted properly and that a check was forced (I did shutdown the system using shutdown -h the day before). After checking the filesystem linux told me that the filesystem was mounted read-only and that I had to run fsck manualy. I did that and I let fsck fix some problems. Now I can start the system, X/kde also starts, but I can not start any programs in X. The desktop also stays empty. Could there be a connection between this problem and the kernel rebuild, or is this just a coincidence? To be on the safe side, I have booted my old kernel now. I do not think I made a lot of filesystem changes in the new kernel. How can I restore the X system, so that my desktop returns and I can start X programs again? Thanks very much, Robert-Jan
