FreeBSD exhibits similar behaviors when > it is extracting its 'bin dist' files. Some older CD-ROM drives tend to have problems with homeburnt cdroms (and CD-RW media even more so), due to the color of the media. These are the classical symptoms. You're probably best off using a different cdrom drive to install from (I'd just take out that 24x for a bit). Check the drive using a CD off a conventional press.
