Well, they provide login prompts on tty2..6. If you log in on one of these VCs at least occasionally then yeah, you probably want them running. They're started directly out of /etc/inittab. (I run getty on tty1..9, xdm on tty10, and gettyps on ttyS1 to run a VT320.
