Depending on your modem model, there's probably an AT command which will give this information. For my USR Courier, it's ATI6. My older modem was a Cardinal internal which IIRC used a Rockwell chipset, and used the command AT&V1. If I reset the Courier (ATZ), it will forget the speed.
