I have a couple of questions, and I haven't been able to find a FAQ for debian-users so you're JUST GOING TO HAVE TO LUMP IT. :-)
First, background (skip down for questions if you wish). I'm a fairly sophisticated Debian GNU/Linux user. I've done a few i386 installs, an Alpha install, and I've gone through two upgrades (1.3 -> 2.0, 2.0 -> 2.1). I figure user-wise I've paid my dues. Anyways, I recently heard on slashdot.org about a Linux distribution called BeroLinux: http://www.berolinux.za.net/ It's a pretty run-of-the-mill one-man distribution -- RedHat 5.2 with KDE & Gnome thrown in, plus Pentium optimizations. Nothing fancy. What I thought was interesting, though, was that the guy had ALSO done a K6-optimized version of the distribution. All the packages are optimized using PGCC's -mamdk6 option! As a longtime K6 user who really thinks that that chip's fancy features are underutilized with vanilla 386 code, I was REALLY INTERESTED. PGCC is here, by the way: http://www.gcc.ml.org/ Then I started thinking that with my brand-new fancy-dancy 4-CD slink distribution, including all the source packages, I had all the source I needed to recompile DEBIAN with K6 optimizations. And I thought to myself, well, wouldn't that be KOOL?!? So, I have a couple of questions for this list: -- BACKGROUND OVER -- QUESTIONS START HERE -- 1) PGCC isn't in slink or potato. I can't find it on FreshMeat, either. Is it available as a .deb anywhere else? or am I going to have to build it from scratch, or use the RPMs from the PGCC site? 2) Is there an easy way to set flags while building a source package, like to say to use the amdk6 option? Oh, and also, of course, to say to use PGCC? 3) Is there an easy way to build ALL the packages in slink from source? 4) Is anyone else interested in a K6-optimized version of Debian (which I've dubbed "K-Rad Debian" in my own head, just because it sounds good)? I'd think it'd be great for pre-install on low-end PCs, a lot of which use the K6. 5) Is this interesting enough to become an "official" port? -- QUESTIONS OVER --- OBSEQUIOUS TIA'S START HERE --- Well, OK, thanks in advance and all that. And sorry if I'm walking over already-trod ground. ~ESP -- ESP | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://www.pigdog.org/
