Hi:
I've been trying for the last week to get my new (3.2G) IDE hard
drive working properly. LILO will not load (for most configurations, I
get as far as "LI"), and I can't seem to edit lilo.conf: when I edit it
in "rescue" mode using the Red Hat 5.0 disks and then restart the system
it keeps resetting itself. I've been very careful to keep the main
partitions below 1023 cylinders in both the hardware configuration (6256
cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors) and the sofware configuration that
fdisk seems to like (782 cylinders, 128 heads, 63 sectors, although I
tried resetting it to the other configuration also with no apparent
change). I've tried using the dos fdisk command to reset the master boot
record and monkeying around with the BIOS. The BIOS I have is
PhoenixBios version 4.05. It lets me set the large disk acess modes to
both "DOS" and "Other", and for the specific disk lets me turn on and
off LBA (tried changing this with and without LILO's Linear addressing),
multi sector transfers, 32 bit addressing, and a few other options which
I haven't used. I've tried reading as much as I can on and off of the
Web (I still have my old hard drive). The drive was working at one point
with three very small partitions, but I didn't write down all the
settings and haven't been able to do the magic fairy tap dance to bring
it back to life. I'm very frusterated at this point and wondering if
there are any additional sources of information I could tap or whether
there is a basic incompatibility which I need to be aware of. I've read
copied of all of the HOWTO's I can find, including the large disk howto,
lilo user's guide, etc., but nothing seems to be working. If I knew how
to change the lilo.config file that would help a lot (I could turn on
the verbose settings, etc.), so if anyone knows how to do that, please
write me, and any additional info would be much appreciated. Thanks in
advance.
