No, you need to tell the X server that they're available.  I suggest doing
this in XF86Config, but you could also do it through a call to xset.  The
XF86Config method is better because it's system wide.  The xfstt docs
explain how to do this using whichever method you choose.  Be aware that
the Debian version of the package uses a different port than the standard
version...I think we use 1700, versus 1701 originally...The docs might
still refer to the origina port, so check the Debian specific fonts...
