The problem is that tar does not recognize it as a tar file. Try file qt-1_42_tar.tar to see what type of file it really is. Maybe it is a gzipped tar file, in which case you need to use `tar xzvf qt-1_42_tar.tar'. Another possibility is that you downloaded it in text mode instead of binary mode.
