Thanks to Marc Wilson and Deryk Barber.
I downloaded the two files:
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.tar.gz
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.tar.gz
from the nVidia web-site:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191
then untarred them in my /usr/src directory and followed the
instructions in the documentation (See Step 2: Review Documentation) to
compile them for my kernel. Then, following some twiddling with the
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, in accordance again with the instructions,
it all worked with the linux 2.4.20 kernel.
Really sort of nice.
