It just need the ide-floppy drivers compiled or loaded as a modules. If you did compile your own kernel (2.0.36 or 2.2.1) you'll see: Include IDE/ATAPI FLOPPY support (new) (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY) [N/y/?] (that's with 2.0.34)
