Try to install X on the minimum specifications first and try to improve it. That is do not select the big numbers but just the smaller ones E.g. try to get 640x400 mode working first by underspecifying the capabilities of your system. Also make sure that only your Xserver is installed. It is sometimes the case that many xserver packages are installed and you are not using the correct ones.
