This wild quess isn't so bad in my opinion. I had quite similar problem and have got such an old pentium processor. But the kernel knows this problem even without recompiling... it gives the message of this bug and does that workaround... hvirtane (in my opinion this question is interesting, that's why i keep on thinking about it.)
