Hi: I would like to thank for all the kind responses and generous assistance I have received on my problem regarding setting the network.
During the installation, I was asked to set the network drivers. Initially, I thought I tried all of the 3COM drivers, and had an impression that at least one succeeded; but, apparently, not. I found that the appropriate drivers for the 3COM Fast Etherlink XL 10/100 Mb is 3c59x 3Com Vortex 3C59x. Afterwards, I was successfully able to install the packages, and now, have a linux system running.
