Don't forget that ip-up.d scripts get run as root, so you'll need your
.fetchmailrc in ~root

If you want to see what's going on, you can use
        /bin/open -s -w /usr/bin/fetchmail
in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/fetchmail instead of whatever the default is (you'll need
the "open" package to do that).
