You are running the XF86_VGA16 server. You should run the XF86_SVGA server. Make sure the xserver-svga package is installed, then edit the first line of /etc/X11/Xserver so that it contains the path name of the svga server, like `/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA'. Then if you run startx, you should get the xserver running. I found this kind of installion error quite often, I suppose the installation procedure could use some `streamlining' here.
