The I/O error is a problem with the disk I would say. I formated a floppy with superformat for 1743 and the dd worked fine (only the ususal record in record out message). I have got the same problem with SYSLINUX, though (on a pentium 60 box, which is capable to boot the resc1440-fast.bin from hamm).
