IIRC the kernel installed at first time you install Debian doesn't have sound enabled, because this do need some info from you, e.g. I/O addr etc. You should recompile kernel, in fact enable sound option at configuration stage. Compiling kernel is not so difficult, install one kernel source package and see manual of 'make-kpkg'. If you configure kernel correctly, your SB16 should work. And have a look at Hardware-HOWTO, maybe Sound-HOWTO and Sound-Playing-HOWTO. Regards, Zhu Rui
