Just a follow up to the X problem. Turns out that the problem was that I had recompiled my kernel (2.0.35) using egcs. Once I did a recompile using, gcc X worked fine again. Thanks to all of those with suggestions. I am posting this in hopes that it might help someone who has a similar problem now/in the future.
