Your enthusiasm is admirable (really, I mean it!), but remembering my own move to linux from DOS, I'd say take your time and don't try to do everything at once. I used DOS and linux in parallel for quite a few months; email and internet were the last things I got working. Of course, if you are already experience in unix this caveat may not apply, but if not it takes a considerable time to get used to the different way of doing things.
