You will find list members more tolerant of your off-topicness if you are seen to be a contributing and useful member of the list. The Internet is an amazing place; there is a ton of information out there. If you don't show an inclination to find some of it on your own (Google, UseNet) and use proper forums (not posting 53 million off topic posts about your pet project, etc.) I'm afraid many netizens are going to shun you.
