Hi,

As two previous posters have pointed out, the CD-Rom will probably be
device /dev/hdb or /dev/hdc.  Linux is supposed to be able to work this
out automatically when you boot up, but it can't always do so -- you'll be
able to tell this from the boot messages you get with dmesg | more.

If this really is the problem then you can fix it in some cases by using
the boot option hdx=cdrom (changing x to b, c or d, whichever is
appropriate). It worked on my machine, anyway. (How you give the kernel a
boot option depends on whether you are using loadlin, lilo or a Linux boot
floppy.)
