X windows Managers

Ive been able to boot X, but I would like to run a windows manager with it like window maker, but I get a Xterm window, and when I try to manually run a manager, I cannot click on the buttons. What did I do wrong? I dpkged the files, and they seem to install correctly...     Is this common for us newbies? or is this a new thing?
