Thanks to all for replies. It seems that I can turn off portmap without anything terrible happening. It also seems that I might turn off inetd since I don't log in remotely and I am the only user. However, man inetd says that it is providing several `trivial' services internally, some of which I presume I want, so perhaps I'd better keep it.
