You want a console shell? Try the keys: <Ctl>-<Alt>-<F(1-6)>
This will get you to a tty virtual console, where you can login. The first virtual console <Ctl>-<Alt>-<F1> is probably busy running x (maybe not, if you use xdm). The others will give a login prompt.
